Call out!

August 11, 2009 dcal 6 comments

August is a pretty happening month for ACG fans in Singapore as there are a whole range of fan-centric activities happening. As it is, there is the STGCC happening this weekend and I was wondering if there are any people interested in organizing a figurine meetup during the one of the 3 days of the event?

And here’s a photograph of my new little Usamimi Yuki to sweeten the deal. =)

The story behind this photograph is rather interesting. I’ll go into detail when I post the rest of this Nendoshoot. =)

“there was this 2 peeps furtively going around Ion Orchard and posing her nendos with the congratulatory flower stands that was available all over the place” – Nyanko-Sempai.

It’s been a while since I drew anything. I felt motivated to draw something so I just did a quickie based on a stock image I had found. I can’t remember where I got the original image from… so apologies for not crediting… whoever the photographer/model may be.

Chibi Gallery: Yako, Miku & Yuki (1/5)

What happens when you own too many pose-able figurines? You take them out to play!
Here’s just some fun while having dinner. The makeshift photoshoot location was at The Soup Spoon in Bugis. Picked that location because it has good food and nice lighting. Even though it was a Sunday evening and the place wasn’t overcrowded, giving us plenty of room to move around. The service crew was also friendly and didn’t seem to mind silly otaku antics. In fact, some of them were amused at what was happening evident from their curious glances.

This post has been a pain to edit due to the sheer number of random pictures that were taken. And these are just the pictures that I took. There is another camera out there that holds the other half of the pictures that we taken that day. The models for the day were Yako & Miku Nendoroids, guest starring Figma Yuki Nagato. =D So here is part 1/5 of the pictures.

Meet Notbear

September 22, 2008 dcal Leave a comment

So here’s the story:

I was on my break at work, wondering around the area, and chanced upon a small shop with an array of arcade crane/claw machines. I had tried my luck there before, failing to get anything. But my luck with these sort of games have always been quite good, I have gotten some interesting prizes before at Odaiba’s Palette Town, where there are arcade claw machines lined up for as far as the eye can see.

With some spare change in hand, I decided to challenge this small arcade’s selection of machines. I first tried out the smaller, less intimidating machines. Didn’t really work out for me. I looked for easier pickings and spotted a bearlike stuff toy sprawled on it’s back, as if calling out to me to rescue it from its plastic enclosure. It took one coin to rescue it. XD Which totally pissed off the dude who was next to me, gawking at my luck, while banging his fist in frustration at the machine he had been feeding coins to for the past half hour.

What happened was that the toy didn’t fall directly into the exit pit, but fell half in before tilting and sliding down the chute. And thus, I happily walked away with “Notbear“. Named as such because it looks like a bear, but isn’t one.

Notbear joins me in my booth, providing me with much needed companionship and a soft pillow to take short naps on.

Notbear making himself very comfortable.

Maybe too comfortable. =/

And he has taken over my work station!

Notbear admires the view of Marina Bay from his perch.

Dcal, not amused by Notbear’s ‘hostile’ take over of her position, vents her anger at the innocent Nugget.

(Nugget is the little hamster like handphone accessory that hands off Dcal’s phone strap.)

Dcal decides it’s time to put an end to Notbear’s nonsense and subdues the stuff toy with hugs.

Vivitar and the River

June 16, 2008 dcal 1 comment

I have quite a few pals who are great photographers and I often admire their pro-skills at their craft. Personally, my knowledge in this field is limited at best and I often depend on my photo-editing skills to make the best of the pictures I take. And thanks to the creation of the digital camera, even idiots like me can take some nice shots without sweating too much.

My experience with cameras begun with me being INFRONT of the camera rather than behind the lens. After being put through quite a traumatizing time associated with the traditional film camera, I stayed clear of any image processing devices. Well, at least till I begun my foray into the artistic side. But even then, I am not madly into photography as it is a pretty expensive venture and I have other costly addictions to maintain.

The friendly point-and-shoot I had was a Canon Ixus 50, till I killed the LCD viewer through some really stupid accident, rendering it useless. During the same time, I got acquainted with the digital SLRs from Nikon and its range of short/long-dist. lens that are really fun to play with. Nowadays, I am too lazy to take decent images and just use my lousy 1.3 megapixel handphone camera to take candid images. Only when some semblance of professionalism is required, do I borrow my dad’s D50.

Recently, I got infected with the photo-bug and picked up a cheap $20 film camera to experiment with.

Here’s the result: Pictures taken old-school style, with a Vivitar Ultra wide & Slim camera. Used some (probably expired) kodak ISO 200 film, making the original prints rather dull. Almost half of the roll I shot looks horrible. Spiced up the better shots with some Photoshop CS3.

Singapore’s unofficial national bird: the Crane.

Picture taken of the construction happening along Marina Bay of the Integrated Resorts.

Emo-angst filled sight of Marina Bay… just beside the HRC esplanade booth. This was taken quite early in the day, before all the lovey dovey couples come to block the view.

Marina Square/Mariott hotel (?).

And the people on the grass patch are actually from some sort of club. Every month or so, they use that area to set up a mini war ground for their miniature tank battles. It’s quite cute!

The colourful MICA building. I love the windows!

The new hippo boat and one of the Filipino deckhands

The Singapore River, specifically, Clarke Quay!

Note the number of bumboats! They are taking their final voyage as diesel boats are being phrased out. No more diesel boats on the river! Another part of Singapore is resigned to the history books.

The electric boats that replace the iconic bum boats!

Hippo River Cruises, Clarke Quay booth. It’s small and stuffy. Infamous for being next to Hooters.

A better view of Maverick (?) or is it Sunshine ? I can’t tell the boats apart.

More of the jetty where the hippo boats are parked. Uncle in the picture is Captain Lim (?), who is one of the nicest boat captains.

I think Central is a beautiful building, just because of the way it reflects the clouds in the sky.

That’s all the pictures for now. I’ll be heading to bangkok soon and this time I loaded some better quality film into the camera. Hopefully I can capture some nicer photographs!
